Asian Buffet in Okemos is on its last legs after 22 years of business.
My father in law Big Ralph received the last good meal of his life when the chefs at Asian Buffet whipped up some of his favorite meals, delivering it to his house before he was admitted to the hospital for the last time as heart failure claimed his life.
So this place has a special place in my heart.
Asian Buffet isn’t the only Michigan restaurant on a respirator because of Covid-19 closures and restrictions. Some experts believe we could lose up to a quarter of the industry unless we figure something out. Asian Buffet wants to hang on by selling gift certificates. Maybe the revenue can help. If it doesn’t then this restaurant will close next year.
We are entering the final days of another governors shut down. She could open up dining rooms on Tuesday or do what she usually does — extend the shut down. I do believe that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has saved lives in Michigan. I also believe she has ruined lives also.
I don’t know what the answer is. Close? Open? Compromise?
“We’re concerned about what happened over Thanksgiving holiday and we’re waiting to see how that is going to impact hospitalizations,” Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist said on WDIV-Channel 4’s Flashpoint. “We’re very concerned about things like the fact that so many hospital systems across the state of Michigan are at capacity and so we have to do things to slow the spread so that we have enough hospital beds to take care of anyone.”
I do not like that Whitmer has this much power over restaurants, gyms and movie theaters. It seems to me that if we had bi-partisan participation along with people from the medical and restaurant profession looking at this issue that we can conjure up a better solution.
I’ve always believed that more eyes on the prize creates better decisions. Our current government does the exact opposite. Republicans gather in closed sessions about issues that affect us all and then are surprised that democrats come up with different and sometimes better ideals.
Whitmer is doing the same. Whitmer has shut out everybody from her inner circle. Maybe shutting down restaurant dining rooms is the best solution to guide us safely through this Covid-19 pandemic. Maybe its not.
There is a delicate balancing act between life and death, life and poverty, hospital capacity and common sense. Let’s get everybody involved to figure that out.Find Terry Foster Podcast here:
